Having studied at Bournemouth College of Art and Design (Foundation), Central St Martins School of Art (BA in Fine Art Painting) and Camberwell College of Art (MA in Printmaking), for the last 25 years Andrew Carter has taught art full time alongside developing his own work.
His work is held as part of collections in Europe and America, including the V&A, Yale Centre for British Art and the Warwick University Collection.
"My work is inspired by what I see around me: In London, my work is inspired by natural occurrences, and I find similarities on my travels to other parts of the British Isles and beyond. Reflections in puddles, splashes of paint, collections of shapes, the shape of branches, leaves and trees; observations whilst walking, fishing and through windows. There is an indexical subject behind each of my works, although it not always plainly obvious: light on water in the outer Hebrides, sea glass collected in Cornwall, the colour of birds feathers seen while walking, light through the pattern of leaves and branches whilst fishing, shapes found mudlarking, oblique reflections of the natural world glimpsed in windows. A loaded ball of paint thrown at a piece of paper."
