John Piper’s Brighton Aquatints
First published in 1939, Brighton Aquatints was John Piper’s only true artist’s book, and one printed entirely in aquatint. Its plates capture the resort’s architecture – the Royal Pavilion, the West Pier, stucco terraces and Victorian churches – and, with John Betjeman’s help, Piper hand-coloured 55 of the original 250 copies.
This edition brings the monochrome and coloured states together for the first time, alongside Piper’s idiosyncratic descriptions of each scene. Alan Powers contributes an introduction on how the book was conceived and produced, together with a commentary on every plate. The design is by Brian Webb.
