Fast Cars & Ukuleles: A Jonny Hannah A to Z

Sale price£20.00

Jonny Hannah’s alphabet is a riotous, autobiographical tour of his own enthusiasms, where English tradition rubs shoulders with Celtic folklore and American popular culture. From Coney Island to Northern Soul and dead men’s suits, each entry pairs hand-drawn lettering with vivid imagery, steeped in the music, fashion and heroes he loves.

Painted lettering, much of it inspired by hand-painted signs and circus typography, is combined with print, letterpress, stencil and collaged tickets and postcards. Anyone who knows Jonny’s work will recognise the energy here: bold colour, irreverent wit and images that seem to leap off the page. Published by The Mainstone Press, best known for its books on Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious, it makes an exuberant companion to his printmaking.

‘Every page of this eccentric alphabet book is full to bursting, crammed with visual detail and graphic delights celebrating the artist’s personal obsessions.’ – The Gentle Author, Spitalfields Life

‘Bursting with colourful layered images, Hannah’s ABC is a fun, light hearted ride through the things he holds dear to his heart, from “Emporiums” through to “Knitted ties” – and even the Devil gets a look in along the way.’ – Derek Brazell, Association of Illustrators
