Boutiques Littéraires: Henri Guilac’s Literary Shops

Sale price£100.00

What if the writers of 1920s Paris had kept shops instead? In Prochainement ouverture de 62 boutiques littéraires (1925), the satirist Henri Guilac pictured 62 authors – Colette, Gide, Proust and Max Jacob among them – in the doorways of shops named in punning tribute to their best-known works. Published by Simon Kra with pochoir illustrations and an introduction by Pierre Mac Orlan, who appears as a shopkeeper himself, it is a witty portrait of a literary scene.

The final book in the Mainstone Press’s Boutiques trilogy includes an essay by Lauren Elkin on the book’s origins, Guilac’s life and the place of the shopfront in Parisian culture. Andrew Stewart supplies notes on all 62 writers, celebrated and forgotten alike, and Neil Philip describes how the book was made.
