Boutiques de la foire: Fairgrounds by Lucien Boucher
Following the success of Boutiques, Lucien Boucher and Pierre Mac Orlan turned in 1926 to the Paris funfair. Boutiques de la foire again comprised 37 autolithographs – rides, stalls and sideshows – and its edition of 500 was soon recognised as a classic in its own right.
The second volume in the Mainstone Press trilogy sets Boucher’s images beside new captions by Andrew Stewart on the 1920s fairground. Circus and funfair historian Pascal Jacob contributes an illustrated essay on the fairground in twentieth-century art, early cinema and picture books, while Mac Orlan’s text appears in Shaun Whiteside’s translation alongside Marcel Bovis’s 1920s photographs of the city’s fêtes foraines. Neil Philip closes with notes on the printing.
