Boutiques by Lucien Boucher
Published in Paris in 1925 in an edition of just 500, Boutiques paired Lucien Boucher’s vivid illustrations of shopfronts and their proprietors with surreal text by Pierre Mac Orlan. It sold out at once, is now counted among the classics of art deco book design, and left its mark on Eric Ravilious, whose High Street (1938) owes much to Boucher.
The first of the Mainstone Press’s Parisian trilogy reproduces all 37 shops with new captions by Andrew Stewart, and Mac Orlan’s text in a new English translation by Shaun Whiteside. James Russell’s illustrated essay explores the world of Boucher, Mac Orlan and their publisher Marcel Seheur, followed by a pictorial survey of Boucher’s Paris and notes on the printing by Neil Philip.
