Written by Chloë Cheese, Iris Weaver, Martin Salisbury, Florence Shaw, Walter Hoyle and George Saumarez Smith
Sheila Robinson – Balance, Humanity and Nature is the first publication to explore the life and work of this prolific artist, illustrator and printmaker.
Born in 1925, Robinson studied at Nottingham Art School before entering the Royal College of Art, where she met tutor Edward Bawden, who would become a lifelong friend.
Already successful as an illustrator, having established a life among the group of artists living in Great Bardfield (including Edward Bawden, John Aldridge and Michael Rothenstein), Robinson created increasingly ambitious prints at Cage Cottage, her home and studio. Thousands of visitors attended open-house exhibitions in the village.
In addition to the work created at home, we showcase a selection of Robinson’s commercial illustrations, along with prints capturing life on the streets of 1970s Istanbul, such as washing hanging outside an old mosque, and a traditional horse-drawn cart full of melons.
The book also includes a selection of prints by the artist’s daughter, Chloë Cheese, who also attended the Royal College of Art. These will often depict collections of everyday objects - jugs, bowls, textiles and chairs.
Robinson’s granddaughter Florence Shaw, an artist, illustrator and lyricist/vocalist of the British band Dry Cleaning, looks at how all three artists include drawing and close observation at the heart of their practice.
Additional writing comes from Iris Weaver (a founding trustee of the Fry Art Gallery Society), Martin Salisbury (a Professor of Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art), Walter Hoyle (an English artist, part of the Great Bardfield group) and architect George Saumarez Smith (an avid collector of Robinson’s work).
